Indore: Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Padma Shri Dr John Ebnezar opined that people must boycott corporate hospitals instead of lamenting the expensive treatment there.

He said that the corporate hospitals have turned the profession of service into a business as the doctors are given targets of surgeries, tests and prescribing medicines for their salary. Interacting with media on Thursday during his visit to the city, Dr Ebnezar expressed concern over increasing conflicts between patients and doctors and blamed the government and administrative system as the root cause of losing people’s trust.

“Medical education has become very expensive as a student has to pay at least half-a-crore rupees to complete the education. Medical colleges are charging several lakhs annually for the education and after ‘investing’ such a huge amount, the student will concentrate only on return,” he said.

Dr Ebnezar said that the government should control and regulate the medical education in such a way that students do not have to invest a huge amount and instead of promoting big hospitals by providing government aid, government should help small hospitals for facilitating patients.  Sharing his experience on poor administration, the Padma Shri said, “I had submitted my research and proposals for Yoga in treatment of arthritis with modern medicine to Indian Orthopaedic Association but they rejected the paper and ridiculed me for combining modern medicine with tradition treatment.  Later, my research paper was adopted by USA’s association and they have circulated a guideline of treatment proposed by me.” Dr Ebnezar opined that our country should adopt our own best practices like our western counterparts are doing.  He also appreciated the move of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority to cut stents prices and said that such action is very much needed in artificial limbs as well.
